This course is aimed at Supervisors, Managers, and Slinger Signallers responsible for overseeing lifting operations. It provides essential instruction on how to safely supervise these operations in compliance with legal requirements, ensuring the health and safety of all personnel and others who may be affected.
The course objectives are to equip delegates with the knowledge and skills needed to supervise lifting operations effectively. Key elements of the course include in-depth training on the legislation governing crane operations, such as the LOLER, PUWER, and HASAWA regulations, as well as the British Standard 7121 on the safe use of cranes.
Course Variants:
- Experienced Worker Course: For those with 2 or more years of recent and continuous experience in supervising lifting operations.
- Foundation Course: Designed for delegates with less than 2 years of experience in the role.
Certification: Successful candidates will receive the NPORS (Trained Operator) card, endorsed with the Crane Supervisor category. This card is valid for 2 years, during which delegates must complete an NVQ to convert their Red NPORS card to a Blue NPORS card. The Blue card is valid for 5 years.
A combined Slinger Signaller and Lifting Operations Crane Supervisor Course is also available, suitable for novice operators with less than 2 years of experience.
Course Content:
- Relevant legislation and codes of practice, including LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA, and British Standard 7121
- Roles and responsibilities of the Crane Supervisor and related positions
- Understanding crane types, capabilities, limitations, and key terminology
- Use and inspection of lifting accessories
- Crane stability, safe loading, and Safe Load indicators
- Planning lifting operations and preparing the lift site
- Maintenance, inspections, and thorough examination of lifting equipment
- Slinging techniques for various loads
- Communication methods for lifting operations
- Supervising and controlling lift operations from a given lift plan
- Identifying hazards and unsafe lifting operations
The course duration varies depending on the delegates’ experience and the delegate-to-machine ratio. All participants are encouraged to complete the NPORS-specific health and safety test. Upon successful completion of the NPORS assessment, delegates will be issued an NPORS Operators Card, valid for 5 years.

- Training can also be conducted at the customer’s premises, provided that the facilities meet the required testing criteria.
- Delegates must bring valid photo identification, such as a passport or driving licence.
