Course Objectives & Description

The course aims to equip delegates with the essential knowledge and skills required to operate both 3b Mobile Boom Lifts and 1b Static Boom Lifts efficiently and safely.

The IPAF 3b Operator category focuses on the safe operation of Mobile Boom Lifts, which are self-propelled machines that may be articulated or telescopic. These boom lifts can be driven while elevated, providing greater flexibility for operators.

Course Details

  • Relevant regulations: ISO 18878, PUWER, LOLER, RIDDOR, WAHR, MHSW
  • Pre-use inspection and handover procedures

In contrast, the IPAF 1b Operator category encompasses Static Boom Lifts that are typically equipped with outriggers and cannot be driven while elevated. This category includes:

  • Van-mounted booms
  • Truck-mounted booms
  • Trailer-mounted booms
  • Spider booms on tracks or wheels

Delegates who successfully complete practical testing on one type of Static Boom will be qualified to operate other types within the 1b category, provided they receive familiarization training on the specific machine.

Additional Categories

Participants have the option to complete up to three IPAF categories on the same training day, subject to prior notice. Categories available include:

  • 3b Mobile Boom Lift
  • 1b Static Boom Lift
  • 3a Mobile Vertical (Scissor Lift training)

On-Site Training

On-site training is available at your premises throughout the UK and Ireland, provided minimum participant numbers are met. For the theoretical portion of the course, a suitable room is necessary, and both a Mobile Boom Lift and a Static Boom Lift are required for the practical sessions. Additionally, each machine’s Operator Manual and a current Certificate of Thorough Examination (issued within the last 6 months) must be provided.

Certification

Successful delegates will receive:

  • An IPAF PAL Card valid for 5 years for both 3b and 1b categories
  • An IPAF Certificate of Training for the 3b Mobile Boom Lift and 1b Static Boom Lift categories
  • An IPAF Safety Guide
  • An IPAF Log Book

Photographs for the operator card will be taken on-site and are included in the course fee.

Trainee Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and medically fit to operate machinery.

PPE Requirements

Trainees are required to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including:

  • Hard Hat
  • Safety Boots
  • Hi-Visibility Vest
  • Harness & Adjustable Restraint Lanyard
