IPAF eLearning Module
The IPAF eLearning module is an integral part of the comprehensive training program for operators of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). This module provides a flexible and interactive learning experience, complementing the hands-on practical training essential for certification.
While the eLearning module equips trainees with valuable theoretical knowledge, it does not substitute the necessity for practical training. Participants must complete the online session, pass a supervised test at one of our IPAF-Approved Training Centres, and successfully finish practical training and assessments to obtain their ePAL operator licence.

MEWP Categories Covered in IPAF Training
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) encompass a wide range of powered access platforms designed to safely elevate workers. The IPAF Operator Training includes several MEWP categories:
- IPAF 3a (Mobile Vertical): Focuses on the safe operation of Mobile Vertical machines, commonly known as Scissor Lifts.
- IPAF 3b (Mobile Boom): Covers the safe use of self-propelled booms (articulating or telescopic) that can be operated while elevated.
- IPAF 1b (Static Boom): Encompasses Static Boom machines equipped with outriggers that cannot be driven when elevated, including van-mounted, truck-mounted, trailer-mounted, and spider booms on tracks or wheels.
- IPAF 1a (Traveling with MEWPs): Focuses on the operation of MEWPs in their transport position, facilitating travel to the work area from the platform.
On-Site Training
On-site training is available throughout Ireland and the UK, contingent upon meeting minimum group sizes and having MEWPs available on-site. A suitable training room is required for the theory portion, along with the necessary MEWPs for practical sessions. Each training site must also provide the Operator Manuals and a current Certificate of Thorough Examination (issued within the last 6 months) for each MEWP.
Trainee Requirements
Participants must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be medically fit to operate machinery.
PPE Requirements
Trainees are required to bring appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including:
- Hard Hat
- Safety Boots
- Hi-Visibility Vest
- Harness & Adjustable Restraint Lanyard
