If you work on a construction site in Ireland, your Safe Pass card is the one piece of ID you cannot turn up without. It also has an expiry date printed on it — and once that date passes, you are off the site until it is sorted.
Here is how long a Safe Pass lasts, what your options are when it runs out, and what changed with the online renewal test.
How long is a Safe Pass valid?
Four years. SOLAS issues every Safe Pass registration card for four years from the date it is granted. After that, the card holder has to refresh their safety awareness training before they can work on site again.
The expiry date is printed on the front of the card. It is worth photographing the card now and putting a reminder in your phone for three months before that date — renewing in good time is far less stressful than renewing the week a job starts.
What happens when it expires?
An expired Safe Pass is treated the same as no Safe Pass. Most main contractors will not let you through the gate, and you cannot be signed on to the site induction. There is no grace period.
The good news is that an expired card does not put you back to square one. You are still eligible to renew — you have not lost your previous training.
Two ways to renew
1. Attend the one-day Safe Pass programme again
This is the route most people take. You book onto a tutor-led Safe Pass course, spend the day in the classroom, and a new four-year card is issued afterwards.
It suits you if you would rather refresh the material properly, if you are not confident sitting a written exam, if English is not your first language, or if you simply want the whole thing done in one day without booking a separate test centre appointment.
It is also the only option if you have never held a Safe Pass before. First-time applicants must attend the classroom programme.
2. Sit the Alternative Safe Pass Renewal Test
SOLAS also allows anyone who has already completed the classroom programme to renew by sitting a computer-based test instead.
- The test is taken at an approved Pearson VUE test centre, booked through your SOLAS account.
- It is a timed, closed-book, multiple-choice exam.
- There is a separate fee, which covers the new card.
The number of questions, the pass mark, the time allowed and the fee are all set by SOLAS and are reviewed from time to time, so check the current details on solas.ie before you book a test centre.
The catch is the pass mark: it is set high, and you are sitting a closed-book exam on material you last saw four years ago. If you do not pass, you have to rebook and pay again — at which point the classroom day often works out simpler, and no dearer.
What you need before you can register
Either route starts with a SOLAS online account. To set one up you will need:
- your PPS number
- your date of birth
- your surname as it appears on official documents
- an active email address — this becomes your username
Bring photo ID and your PPSN with you on the day of a classroom course as well. Your name is registered with SOLAS exactly as it appears on your ID, so if your name is spelled differently on different documents, sort that out before you book rather than after.

Quick answers
Can I renew before my card expires?
Yes, and you should. You do not lose the remaining time — renewing early simply means you are never caught short.
My card expired two years ago. Can I still do the online test?
Yes. Eligibility for the renewal test is based on having completed the classroom programme previously, not on the card still being in date.
I have lost my card.
A lost card is a replacement, not a renewal. Contact SOLAS for a replacement if the card is still in date; if it has expired, you are renewing anyway.
Is Safe Pass the same as a CSCS card?
No. Safe Pass is general site safety awareness and every worker needs it. CSCS cards cover specific plant and equipment — a dumper, a teleporter, a 360 excavator — and are separate courses.
