Course Objectives & Description

Machine Specific Familiarisation is designed for operators who have already received training on Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) but require additional knowledge and practical experience with a specific make or model. This training is crucial for operators transitioning to machines with significantly different characteristics, such as weight, height, width, length, or complexity, compared to those they were previously trained on.

It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that all operators using equipment are adequately trained and familiarised to comply with current health and safety legislation. This course is also beneficial for MEWP operators who may be designated to lower the MEWP from ground controls in emergencies. Candidates who do not hold a current MEWP Operator card are strongly encouraged to complete one of our foundational MEWP training courses—such as the JPC Plant & Safety MEWP or IPAF Operator 3a, 3b, or 1b courses—before attending this familiarisation.

The primary goal of this course is to equip previously trained operators with the machine-specific knowledge needed to operate a particular make or model of MEWP efficiently and safely.

Course Description

The course follows basic training and covers:

  • Manufacturer’s instructions and warnings
  • Features of the specific model
  • Control functions
  • Safety devices
  • Emergency lowering procedures

All relevant information is provided in the materials accompanying the machine.

On-Site Training

On-site training is available at your premises throughout Ireland and the UK, subject to minimum participant requirements. The specific model of MEWP must be present for practical training, and a safe, suitable area is required for the operation of the machine. The Operator’s Manual and a copy of the current 6-month Certificate of Thorough Examination for the MEWP are mandatory.

Certification

Machine Specific Familiarisation is intended for MEWP operators who have successfully completed an IPAF Operator training course in the appropriate category and possess a current IPAF Certificate of Training and PAL Operator Licence. Written confirmation can be provided to validate the model of MEWP used during the familiarisation. Please note that this training does not replace the standard IPAF Operator training.

Trainee Requirements

Candidates for IPAF MEWP courses must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Be medically fit to operate machinery

PPE Requirements

Trainees must provide and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes:

  • Hard Hat
  • Safety Boots
  • Hi-Visibility Vest
  • Harness
  • Adjustable Restraint Lanyard

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for IPAF Operators already trained in the relevant MEWP category but who are unfamiliar with the specific make and model they plan to operate. It is specifically designed for operators seeking to enhance their knowledge of complex or specialized MEWP models.

Training Methods

Training will employ various methods, including:

  • Presentations with slides
  • Videos
  • Printed course materials
  • Demonstrations
  • Practical exercises

Who Will Benefit?

This training is beneficial for all individuals in your organization who use, supervise, or manage different types of MEWPs, including:

  • Scissor Lifts
  • Mobile Vertical Lifts
  • Self-Propelled Telescopic Booms
  • Articulating Booms
  • Static Booms (including Spider Booms on tracks or wheels)
  • Van-Mounted Booms
  • Truck-Mounted Booms
  • Trailer-Mounted Booms

Additionally, this course is advantageous for operators who may need to act as a designated person to lower the MEWP from ground controls in case of an emergency.

Note: IPAF training is provided by a third-party organization through an IPAF registered training centre.
