N039 Plant Inspector – Thorough Examination

The NPORS N039 Plant Inspector—Thorough Examination course is designed to equip individuals with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to carry out compliant, in-depth inspections of plant and lifting equipment in line with LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998 regulations. This course enables participants to conduct thorough examinations—commonly known as LOLER inspections—on a wide range of equipment, including lift trucks, earth-moving machinery, cranes, MEWPs, and structures.

Upon successful completion, candidates will be qualified to perform inspection duties as competent persons in the workplace, meeting the latest compliance standards outlined by NPORS and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Course Description

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • Industry hazards and responsibilities in plant inspection

  • Equipment setup and operation according to manufacturer handbooks and load charts

  • Risk assessment and toolbox talk participation

  • Pre-start, operational, and shutdown inspections

  • Visual and functional examination of key components (hydraulics, booms, winches, forks, etc.)

  • Load testing in accordance with regulations

  • Inspection reporting using standardised checklists and documentation

  • Use of measuring and diagnostic tools such as DPI gauges, Verniers, hydraulic pressure gauges, and RCI/LMI systems

  • Inspection of emergency lowering devices, crane RCI systems, slew ring motions, fork arms, and more

  • Introduction to NDT/Examination Methods: MT, PT, UT, RT, ET, and weld inspection

  • End-of-task procedures and debrief participation

  • 1–5 Days
    (Duration varies based on candidate experience and prior qualifications.)

  • Available for both Novice and Refresher levels
