Course Objectives & Description

The course is designed to teach delegates how to safely plan and execute lifting operations in compliance with legal requirements, ensuring the health and safety of all employees and any others affected by the work. To accommodate different experience levels, the course is offered in two variants: Foundation and Experienced Worker.

  • Foundation Course: Spanning 4 to 5 days, this variant is ideal for beginners or those with less than 2 years of experience.
  • Experienced Worker Course: This shorter 2-day variant is available for those with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the role.

Upon successful completion, delegates will gain the knowledge and skills needed to safely plan lifting operations using mobile cranes on busy construction sites. Key topics covered include:

  • Overview of qualifications and their importance
  • Relevant legislation, including the LOLER regulations
  • Roles and responsibilities of the Appointed Person
  • Crane stability and the principles of planning lifting operations
  • Mobile crane types and specific considerations for planning lifts
  • Hands-on drawing workshops for lift planning
  • Routine maintenance of plant machinery
  • Safe working procedures
  • Pre-use and post-use procedures

The course duration may vary depending on delegate experience and the instructor-to-delegate ratio, particularly regarding machine operation. It is recommended that all participants complete the NPORS-specific health and safety test.

All delegates will be assessed through the NPORS assessment process. Successful candidates will receive an NPORS Operators Card, valid for 5 years. Participants must bring photo identification, such as a valid passport or driving licence, to the course.
